Tigrinya vs. Amharic: what's the difference, and which should you learn first?
Both Tigrinya and Amharic use the Fidel script and share Habesha roots, but they're distinct languages. Here's how to decide which to study first.
If you have roots in both Eritrea and Ethiopia, or if your family spans both traditions, you may be asking: should I learn Tigrinya or Amharic first? The honest answer depends on your personal connection, but understanding the differences helps.
The shared foundation: Ge'ez
Both Tigrinya and Amharic descend from Ge'ez, the ancient Semitic language of the Aksumite empire. They share the same writing system (Fidel/Ge'ez script), a significant amount of vocabulary, and similar grammatical structures.
This is great news for learners: if you learn one, you have a significant head start on the other. The Fidel script you learn for Tigrinya is the same script used for Amharic, so reading skills transfer directly.
Key differences
| | Tigrinya | Amharic | |---|---|---| | Primary region | Eritrea, Tigray (Ethiopia) | Ethiopia (national language) | | Speakers | ~7–9 million | ~25+ million | | Consonant count | Slightly more (pharyngeal sounds) | Slightly fewer | | Shared characters | ~90% | ~90% |
Tigrinya includes some pharyngeal consonant sounds that Amharic doesn't emphasise as strongly. Amharic has some sounds and vocabulary that differ from Tigrinya equivalents.
Which should you learn first?
Learn Tigrinya first if:
- You have Eritrean roots or family from Tigray
- You want to read Tigrinya messages, letters, or social media
- Your closest family members speak Tigrinya
Learn Amharic first if:
- You have Ethiopian roots outside Tigray
- You want broader access to Ethiopian media, literature, and public life
- You plan to travel widely in Ethiopia
Learn both if:
- You're Habesha and want to bridge both communities
- You already speak one and want the script to unlock the other
The practical advice
Start with the language you hear most at home. The emotional motivation of connecting with people you love is the most powerful force in language learning. Once you've learned the Fidel script for one language, picking up the other takes far less time than starting from zero.
